Class 8 volume through large no-reserve auction locations decreased substantially in November, but the total universe of medium and heavy trucks sold through all auction companies was unusually high this month. In fact, November’s total, which includes all auctions plus dealer-to-dealer sales, should come in at roughly 5400 – the highest volume month since the pre-recovery month of August of 2009! See graph below for detail.

A larger number of cargo vans is mainly responsible for the increased volume. The modern compact and large European-style vans that have entered the market in the past few years are coming off trade in greater numbers, and November saw a major increase. Other medium and heavy segments increased incrementally, contributing to the higher total.

We’ve been tracking the market for these newer cargo vans closely, and expect November’s pricing to show a mild to moderate decrease as a result of this higher volume. Stay tuned for an update.
