Mitsubishi is dusting off an iconic nameplate and preparing it for an upcoming crossover. The Eclipse, originally introduced in 1989 as a two-door coupe, was a foundation for Mitsubishi’s sports-minded direction. According to Automotive News, the Japanese brand is naming its newest crossover the Eclipse Cross and hopes the revived nameplate will elicit some fond memories with consumers.

Mitsubishi has transitioned away from coupes and sedans and turned their focus to SUVs and crossovers, a market that has shown tremendous growth over the past few years. The design, inspired by the brilliant ring around the moon during a solar eclipse, promises dynamic styling. The Eclipse Cross will fall between the Outlander and the Outlander Sport, which is due for a downsizing on the next generation. Look for more details at the vehicle's official launch during the Geneva Auto Show next month.
