We got to spend some time in the 2017 Honda Ridgeline AWD RTL-E. Here are our notes after several hours in the vehicle. Please note these are reviewer impressions, assembled from multiple analysts and other in-house contributors.

Engine

  • Strong acceleration.
  • We averaged 20.6 mpg mixed city/highway with extensive idling in the East Coast’s Polar Vortex weather.

Cool Features We Weren’t Expecting

  • Remote start is *clutch* in cold weather.
  • Loved the heated steering wheel.
  • Ergonomic Interior: Everything makes senses.
  • Rear seats fold up against rear bulkhead. Plenty of free-floating storage underneath.
  • Convex mirror that stores sunglasses, just like in the Odyssey minivan, is super cool and helps parents keep an eye on the kiddos.
  • Cargo bed is awesome. There are even bed speakers, LED bed lights, an in-floor, water tight cooler/storage area. Tailgate with traditional opening hinge and *house door* hinge feature is awesome and makes way more sense, especially for shorter, less muscular types.

Usability and Technology

  • Since the truck is not super tall, it’s as easy as a CUV to get in/out of.
  • Great visibility, not a lot of blind spots.
  • Honda infotainment unit works well, though we wish it had a 360-degree camera system in addition to just the rear-view backup camera. Parking sensors on the front and back help, but a top-view camera would really slam things home.

Ride

  • Very quiet, feels very premium
  • Steering is our favorite among all trucks. Period. It’s tight, responsive and when you do an evasive maneuver test (sharp left-to-right dodge), the suspension doesn’t get unsettled, nor the chassis. Impressive.
  • AWD system was tested in snow/ice mode during a massive ice storm that hit the DC area a week before Christmas. Vehicle handled extremely well.
  • With snow tires, the Ridgeline might feel like it would be unstoppable in the snow, but we’d have to test it to be sure.
  • No locking differentials since it is AWD and not 4WD, but a great truck that will be able to handle 9/10 duties.

Special Notes

  • Smaller form factor means this truck is the best, *untruck* for suburban and urban dwellers.
  • Its size and turning radius is grocery store parking lot-friendly and makes for a usable commuter (in addition to weekend DIY duties).
