Similar to the way your smartphone makes operating system updates over cellular service, manufacturers are beginning to change the way vehicle software is updated.

Over-the-air (OTA) vehicle system updates not only improve functionality but also add new features. Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors is currently leading the way on this new way of product improvement. So, what do consumers think about the technology?

A recent study conducted by J.D. Power reports these new-era technologies are well received by participants, but they aren’t perfect. Some respondents reported problems that created frustration, like the modification of their previously programmed user settings. Others complained they disliked the current software update, and are not able to return to the earlier version which had become familiar.

In addition to product improvement, OTA updates allow the manufacturer to learn the how, when, and what of a vehicle when it comes to its usage. While positive aspects are found in this feature, the study notes privacy and security remain a concern among study respondents.
