Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz stopped sales on its diesel models in the U.S. in order to mitigate scrutiny during the aftermath of #dieselgate. The Three-Pointed Star has chosen to focus efforts on a new front. As reported by Automotive News, Daimler is preparing to invest $1 billion in its Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant.

Mercedes is the latest company looking to fortify its U.S. production and aims to use the plant to manufacture electric sport utility vehicles. The U.S. continues to be the most profitable global vehicle region and the battle for market share is heating up. The move also appeases a push by president Trump to curb imports and increase domestic production.

It's unclear whether the move is part of the German brand’s planned $1.3 billion investment, announced nearly 2 years ago. A formal announcement is expected later today.
