The introduction of the Civic Type-R to the United States has caused a frenzy. Originally priced at $36,000, demand for the latest hot hatch has driven prices up as much as $20,000. The current Type-R is only available as a touring model, but according to The Truth About Cars, Honda is planning a new entry-level version for 2018.

A new model code, separate from the Touring trim has been identified in Honda’s latest NHTSA certification papers. Current speculation is that this new trim may be a stripped-down version – aimed at the tuner crowd and could be priced as low as $30,000.

Components from the standard Civic like seats, audio system, all-season tires and a downgraded aero package would provide significant cost savings and allow consumers to upgrade to their taste. No official word has been given from Honda.
