In 1957, Porsche built a four-cylinder open cockpit racecar dubbed the ‘718’. It claimed a class win and overall third place at Le Mans, as well as several other podium finishes. Fast forward nearly 50 years and Porsche has plans to revive the moniker.

According to Jalopnik, the upcoming 2016 Boxster and Cayman will be known as the Porsche 718 Boxster and the Porsche 718 Cayman. The news comes on the heels of an announcement that both vehicles will be powered by a new turbo four-cylinder boxer engine. Porsche also stated that both the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will have more in common by sharing “visual and technical” pieces. The new moniker will begin to show up as models hit the dealerships in 2016.
