The International Institute of Highway Safety is responsible for conducting studies related to the automobile industry; most notably its safety tests. IIHS is tasked with crash testing every car that runs on U.S. streets, and their tests are regarded as the most rigorous in the industry. According to Shifting Lanes, the institute’s most recent test of American muscle cars delivered some less than desired results. The Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger were all subjected to a bombardment of tests and none were able to earn a “Top Safety Pick” designation. The Blue Oval’s Mustang scored best, but it was the small overlap test that hurt all three of the competitors. With nearly 25 percent of serious and fatal injuries resulting from this type of crash, the results were a bit disappointing. These sports cars are designed for performance, but it appears safety hasn’t quiet caught up.
