On the heels of an announcement from Chevrolet that the 2018 ZL1 Camaro would receive an all-new 10-speed automatic, the Blue Oval has followed suit. Reports from Motor Authority indicate the decade-geared transmission is the result of an almost inconceivable partnership between GM and Ford, which was originally intended for Ford’s pickup trucks.

While it is unclear which model of the Mustang lineup will get the double-digit gearbox, the reasoning behind the addition of more gears to the vehicle is clear: fuel economy.

General Motors has stated the new 10-speed rivals the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, which is widely viewed as the benchmark of automated performance transmissions.
