Do more gears equal better fuel economy? A recent look at the patent filings for the auto industry would lead you to believe that is true. Last year, Ford filed for an all-new 11-speed automatic and now it appears to be Honda's turn. According to Autoblog, the Japanese manufacturer has filed a patent for an 11-speed transmission but with a twist. This gearbox features three clutches, which should allow for quicker shifts while maintaining torque between upshifts. The benefits of this transmission translate across Honda's lineup with  larger vehicles, like the Pilot, gaining a bump in fuel economy and sporty vehicles seeing reduced shift times. Much of the information is still to be released but it appears that more gears work better for Honda.
