Discontinued in 2014, the Toyota FJ Cruiser filled a niche need for a purpose built off-road vehicle. Perhaps the only real competitor to the Jeep Wrangler, the FJ went relatively unchanged throughout its eight year run. Rather than refresh the iconic off-roader, it appears Toyota is ready develop its replacement. According to a recent post on Autoblog, the folks over at Toyota have registered a trademark on the “FT-4X” name.

Toyota has a recent history of using the FT designation on its concept vehicles, and the “4X” suggests it will be some kind of four-wheel drive vehicle.

With Ford’s recent confirmation of the Bronco revival, an FJ replacement would prove to be an ideal competitor. Sources also suggest the public could see this concept sooner rather than later, but until then, the rumor mill will continue to churn.
